Hmmm

So I've been working on these quilt blocks since JANUARY. Blocks are made. Then I spent most of a weekend retreat making sashing pieces. I finally got the chance to set some of this assemblage up on my design wall and I'm not sure what I think.

The sashing seems kind of.........assertive.

I had this quilt in my mind as mostly blacks and tans. Originally the idea for sashing was that it would be tan and darker tan. But somehow when I cut the pieces, it was the oranges I reached for. (The blank squares will hold more yet-to-be-made ninepatches.)

I've seen some really successful quilts where the sashing was a bit dominant. Is this going to be one of those quilts, or should this sashing be saved for Another Quilt?

I can see what you mean, but I think they look *assertive* because the connecting squares in the sashing aren't yet there. Will they be nine patches? A print square? Before you go any further, put something in those blank spaces and I think that will make your decision easier.
I think it looks great now, though!

I like the sashing pieces! They are a muted orange, not too bright, and they have enough consistent color to unify the quilt and bring it to life. But I tend to like a little color in my quilts, and not everyone does. I think this is really lovely right now.

Don't touch it.When you've filled in the blanks it will be great.

I've just spotted another book that we've got in common. The House on the Divina. I love it. Have you read Journey into the Mind's Eye by Lesley Blanch?

I love that sashing! And I do think filling in the blanks in one area would help you decide if you like it. Looking forward to seeing what you decide.

I think once the 9 patches are in place it will bond. I like the splash of brightness!

I am not much of a traditional quilter, but I love the graphic quality of this. I think the others are right, when it is completed, it will looking smashing.

Sometimes 'different' is exactly what a quilt needs. It looks very bold now, and slightly uncoordinated, but when you get that cornerstone placed, it's going to be DYNAMITE!!! Frankly, I'm VERY eager to see what you come up with. 8-)))

What happens if you turn the sashing pieces around 180 degrees?

Oh - I guess they are sewn together already but ... ?

The color combination is quite striking and I like that it doesn't have the "safe" 9 patch vibe. I say...go for it!!

I think it will be good once the squares are in plzce. You said they were nine patches. Maybe they should be a tone on tone or small print that reads like a solid?

I like it... If you use "square in a square" for the corner stones, you will kind of mimic an ocean waves setting...

I can also see 5 black /4 orange 9patches...

I am going to play devil's advocate and ask you what would happen if you slashed the sashing blocks down the middle and sewed them back together with the dark on the outside? Don't you think it would turn the other blocks into a different block? Jes' askin'.

I think the sashing you have chosen really makes the quilt!

I love it! I know what you mean about it not being what you pictured -- I had that happen with an applique block I was prepping today -- but I think what you've got is wonderful.

Let's see, orange is one of my most favorite colors and I love the piecing so I'm going to be of no help.

Besides that, when you said: "The sashing seems kind of.........assertive." I giggled and knew I wouldn't be able to offer much other than my initial visual vibe. The use of metaphor cracked me up!!!

I like it a lot, maybe the quilt is wanting to be this way.

I love the sashing - it may be a good idea to wait until you have the pieces between the sashing strips before you decide if you like them or not - I think they'll make a abig difference.

I love the sashing and even think a plain square in the empty space would look great! Gonna have to remember this sashing for the future!

Well, it seems like it has changed the quilt into something you didn't expect. I think the sashing makes it more of an awesome orangey diamond quilt than a 9-patch quilt, but there's nothing inherently wrong with that! If you were really wanting to showcase the 9-patches, then maybe ditch it for another quilt. But, if you were just trying to make a gorgeous quilt, you're well on your way!

I love what you have designed and I think it will be wonderful. Don't hesitate... like they say if you love it, it will work! sue

I think the humble nine patch needs a little assertive sashing sometimes! I love it! And I would do the nine patches just as your others are. I think it will be fabulous!!!
