Caroline is visiting this week and we seized the day for a trek to Evanston, Illinois, (greater Chicago) to the wonderful Vogue Fabrics and wrestle with some bridal decisions. We'd been emailing ideas and pattern links back and forth for weeks. Bridesmaid Michelle came along with us for moral support.
The pattern decision was easy--Vogue V2965, a sleek and simple dress that absolutely has Caroline's name written all over it.
Pattern in hand, we headed to the bridal/evening fabrics department. That turned out to be simple too. We pounced on just about the first thing we saw--luscious antique white silk charmeuse. Liquid and drapey, it should work up beautifully in this bias-cut dress.
In another lifetime, I was a fashion design student, learning all kinds of couture techniques I've never really used very much in the real world. But since Caroline was born, my dream has been to someday put it all to use and to make her a fabulous wedding dress.
So off we go! The first step will be to make the dress in muslin, to be sure of fit. The first fitting will be sometime this fall.
It'll be a few months before I have to summon the emotional strength to cut into the very pricey silk charmeuse.

I'm not sure I'm supposed to see this... is it bad luck to see the material? the pattern?
I was thinking of making a tux in that material, but I guess I'll have to look for something else now... maybe a nice plaid....
Ooh, you're brave. Thank goodness for muslin, eh? Gorgeous pattern.
Very pretty.
Would you belivev I have lived my who life in Chicagoland and dated the son of the owners and never have been to Vogue. I am sure missing out on a good thing.
Oh my gosh this is beautiful!
This will be beautiful. I made my sister's wedding gown - white velvet. My daughter gave me 3 month's notice so I didn't make hers. We bought a sample off the rack and since she is 5"11". I had to find a way to add length. It is a long story, but I did it.
I am sure it will be lovely. Do tear drops stain that material? I don't know how you will do it with out tearing up?
gorgeous dress. gorgeous fabric. Right after i got married (in a sort of baroque number: bodice encrusted with sequins and pearls that my sister and i sewed on the night before) I saw a dress *exactly* like this and thought: Next time!
Your daughter is lucky to have you for a mom!
